Arioso No. 2 for String Orchestra
(1967)
Music by Philip Glass
CAST:
voice, vln, accordian, percussion
COMMISSION:
The Pittsburgh Public Schools by the Ford Fundation
NOTES:
Glass's earlier pieces were meditative, steady-state pieces that established
a mood and stayed there. The Arioso is a study in the elongation and subsequent
contraction of a simple musical line. As in other Glass's early music it
is agressively reductive in its form, melodic content and harmonic language.
