Notes

Mercelli’s dynamic playing blends perfectly with the resplendent performance of i Virtuosi Italiani, an ensemble that I admired greatly mostly through its recordings of the works of Nino Rota. It turns out fairly late in the process, that I discovered that the pianist heard on the recording is Carlo Boccadoro, whom I met years ago when Philip Glass called me and told me he was sending someone over to the Looking Glass Studio. I have since admired Carlo and his group Sentieri selvaggi through their performances in New York and their recordings including Façades and the work of Michael Nyman.

This album contains two works springing from Glass’ collaboration with Taoist master Sat Hon. Chaotic Harmony for flute and cello was written in 2006 by Glass to accompany the film of the same name by Sat Hon. It was later reworked and transformed by Glass into the piece “Songs & Poems (No.1)” for solo cello. This is the first time the original version is heard on recording. The second premiere is “Taoist Sacred Dance,” also meant to accompany work by Sat Hon. It was premiered on November 19, 2003 at Interfaith Center of New York by Philip Glass and Andrew Sterman.
